CNHS Short-Film Festival 2023

An exhibit of Media & Information Literacy group projects. The festival is part of the annual SHS Summit activity in the school. This idea was conceptualized by Mrs. Rosalinda B. Dumalag.

A manuscript extracted from the message given during the event:

The life-blood in our education system are the learners and the teachers. In our body, every organ works so that blood will circulate throughout the body to sustain life. If ever things interrupt the continuous flow of blood will affect the whole system, thus creating diseases of any sort.

In education, the teaching-learning activities must be put on top priority or the system will fail. The teacher's role is to teach the learners, and the learners primary objective is to learn. In education we teachers give instructions, we expose the learners for them to gain experiences, we push them so that they will be able to discover their capacities and understand their limits. And if necessary we temper teaching with discipline for the development of the learners.

The world is ever-changing and so with the challenges of our existence. Technology made our lives easier, while the industry and economy add the complexities of living. We need to face the challenges, we need to innovate to adapt and to prepare our learners for this continuously evolving challenges in our society.

We in Concepcion NHS, wishes to equip and prepare our learners for the 21st Century Challenges. This Short Film Festival is one of the innovations to act upon this new challenges.

According to CapstoneCore, “a 21st century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed in this new world, and helping them grow the confidence to practice those skills. With so much information readily available to them, 21st century skills focus more on making sense of that information, sharing and using it in smart ways.”

21st century education is all about the cultivation of Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication, and Collaboration.

This Short-Film Festival adheres to this notion. This is actually 3 subjects in senior high school combined; Introduction to Philosophy of the Human Person, Business Ethics and Social Responsibilities, and Media and Information Literacy. These subjects merge into 1 output.

Media and Information Literacy focuses on the technical aspect: teaching them the techniques of film creation and cinematography. Philosophy of the Human Person guides them the morals and values of the story and not only that, their inter-action to one another in the realization of their tasks. Business Ethics and Social Responsibilities matters on the economy of time, money and effort as they accomplish their tasks.

I understand how much time these students took to form the storyline, mixing it with values, making the whole story interesting, not boring. And not only that, they should have studied how to make every scene realistic when handling the camera. I can think of how much patience they gave in when talking about collaboration, time, and effort. Remember their individual differences, different attitudes, different inclinations, working together for their project. I see this activity a successful 21st century learning activity.
And I look forward to a better output next school year.

To the participating grade 12 students, congratulations! It is a job well-done!
